PROGRAM NOTE

In the winter of 1877, Monet returned again and again to the Gare Saint-Lazare, filling twelve canvases with a single obsession. What he painted was not the trains themselves but the moment when light dissolves into steam — a new kind of fog, born of the modern age.
Writing this piece, I kept thinking of someone boarding a train for the countryside — the excitement of departure, the landscape sliding past the window, and then the slow drift into sleep somewhere along the way. The trumpet opens with something of that energy before dissolving into a half-dreaming state. When the melody of Ma Normandie surfaces — a song of the Norman countryside — it feels like a vision glimpsed in sleep. Then a whistle sounds, and they wake. The train is still moving — and it arrives in full glory.
