PROGRAM NOTE
Somewhere on the open plains of southern Sweden, horses stand quietly against a sky that is neither day nor night. When I first came across Nils Kreuger's Nightfall (1904), I found myself held by that suspended hour in a way I couldn't quite explain.
Kreuger belonged to a generation of European painters living in the wake of Japonisme — that wave of influence from Japanese prints that shaped Van Gogh and so many others, with its feeling for silence, for outline, for what is left unspoken. Something of that sensibility, not entirely by design, seems to have found its way into this music as well.
This piece began with the stillness I felt from the painting: the last warmth in the light, and the night already moving in. I gave the horn what remains of the day; the piano holds the air and the earth. Starting in a recitative-like voice, the music moves — slowly and inevitably — toward darkness.
